Best Practice No. 2 - Keeping an eye peeled.

Close monitoring of the work environment, especially on the waterfront, is a critical part of making any maritime security program work. Just like participating in your neighborhood watch helps to keep your house secure, everyone working on the waterfront can help keep our ports secure by closely monitoring the activities that go on around us on a daily basis.

National security personnel have recommended keeping an eye out for unusual activities at important waterfront locations, such as:
  • Port facilities
  • Bridges
  • Tunnels
  • Power plants
  • Water facilities
Watch out for unusual activity in your port near cargo vessels...
  • Signaling between ship and shore
  • Transferring of people and/or goods at unusual locations
  • Missing or broken fencing
  • Fishing or hunting in atypical areas
  • Unusual night activities
  • Unattended small boats or vehicles along shore
  • Missing or broken fencing
  • Anchoring in unusual areas
  • Filming and/or photography
  • Divers
Above all, it must be reminded that you should not take any action yourself. Leave that to the authorities. If you see anything, please call 911.

Also, you can call the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802. Any kind of a maritime emergency - security event, oil spill - may be reported there.
