Best Practice No. 5 - Security Training and Awareness.

C-TPAT specifically requires that "a security awareness program should be established and maintained...to recognize and foster awareness of security vulnerabilities to vessel and maritime cargo."

So, what is the best way to go about training?

First you need to identify the need.  Who needs training?  In the world after 9/11, everyone needs training.

At COSCO, we use both in-house developed and off-the-shelf security training courses.  All employees are required to take some courses.  Some employees are required to take additional courses depending on their job position; this usually applies to management and marine operations personnel.

Next, you have to determine the method of delivery.  Because all COSCO employees have workstations with access to our internal network, all of our security training is conducted online.

Regardless of which training materials you use, it is very important to keep good training records.
